Construction offers a world of opportunity and career paths. The building and construction industry is constantly growing and providing many people with exciting, diverse careers. The industry employs many hundreds of thousands of people throughout Australia and includes both the private and the public sectors (governments, local councils, etc.).

 

Career paths can be broken down into the following; 

 

Civil construction which includes occupations in road construction and maintenance, bridge and marine construction, foundation work including anchors and piling, railway construction and maintenance, tunnel construction and pipe laying.

General construction can include high- and low-rise commercial buildings, industrial buildings and/or residential buildings, carports and garages. It is where people in occupations such as carpentry, plastering, bricklaying, tiling and concreting use and develop their trade skills.

 

Services sector involves careers that are necessary to the installation, operation and maintenance of buildings and other structures and includes trade occupations that require licensing or regulation, such as plumbing and draining, gas fitting, air-conditioning and refrigeration.

 

Off-site careers involve the manufacture and fabrication of building components to be used or installed in a building structure. Career paths include joinery, joinery machining, shop fitting, stair building and stonemasonry.
